And Baby Makes Three . . .

In a few months, Brittany will look like this!

Photobucket

Isn't she cute?!

I am soooo excited to share her and Ili's exciting news!

I must confess;
much of our shopping spree at San Marcos Outlets a few weeks ago,
was spent in Motherhood Maternity shop.
They had little pillows for Brit to put under the clothing;
it was really fun to see how she will look!

Chloe also thought it was very funny to put the pillow under her own blouse

. . . . not so much.

There is nothing sweeter than a new little baby,

and this will be grand baby number four!

The due date is April 26th.

I can't wait to see if I need to buy blue or pink!

---------------------

My Grandma Gibbs was from Oklahoma
and she made the best fried pies in the world.
I am not exaggerating ...not even a little bit.
These little half moon shaped apricot filled flaky crust delights
Were soooo good that someone actually stood up at her funeral

and said, “I’m sure going to miss her fried pies”.

On many a visit I asked Grandma to teach me how to make them,
I could never get the crust just right. Hers was flaky perfection.
So, after repeated mediocre attempts,
I accepted the fact that Grandma’s fried pies were just
one more special thing that passed away with her.
At least that is what I thought until today.

Driving Interstate 35 from Oklahoma to Texas,

THIS sign marks exit 51

Photobucket

The car just pulled in on its own,

we couldn't control it.

The moment I walked into the shop,
the aroma placed me in Grandma’s kitchen.
My hopes began to rise.

In order to make the most direct comparison, I tried the apricot.

Took one bite. . . and oh . . . my . . . goodness . . . .

Photobucket

I can’t think of a superlative that is super enough

It was identical to Grandma's,
The crust, the filling, EVERYTHING.
I ate one and bought 2 more.

It turns out, fried pies were not just my Grandma’s thing,
they are an Oklahoma thing.

We will definitely be making future stops at exit 51.

Yummy Treat. Warm Grandma memories.

Road Trip

We are off to see this cute couple in Oklahoma City!

Photobucket

We are excited to visit a new place!

All set for the 8 hour drive
(a piece of cake, compared to our Cali trip)

It is a 3 day school holiday, that we are stretching to 4;

Shhhh, don't tell Chloe's school she wasn't really sick today.

Last year she had 100 % attendance, we just blew that one :(

Have a nice Columbus Day . . . .

See ya next week!

Unexpected Things

Photobucket

One day, while enjoying my morning walk, I approached a scraggly tree that forced me to duck under its branches overhanging the sidewalk. This sparse, dry, bush was as overgrown and unkempt as desert sagebrush. While passing beneath the ugly tree, I could see small blossoms protruding from the brittle twigs, so I pulled one near for inspection. Then, came a completely unexpected surprise; the blossom was exquisitely beautiful and as delicate as an orchid.

Many, pass their exercising miles away accompanied by an ipod, listening to motivating music, or as my neighbor, Ed, prefers, books on tape. Personally, I like to hear to the sounds of the earth. After a mile or so, I find myself deep in thought; solving, not just my problems, but the world’s. It was in such a mood this little flower found me.

I began to reflect on how much lovelier things can be when they come unexpectedly. Contrasted against ugly foliage, this blossom was more beautiful, more appreciated, than if it were growing, predictably, on a lush tropical plant. I thought of how that principle applies to other things in life. A stranger offers to let you go ahead in line or you find a dollar in the road; experiences sweetened by the unexpected.

In college, my mother and I took a theatre class in London, England; a very special time together, that I will never forget. One of the first afternoons, we had some free time; with map in hand, we boarded the subway to find Buckingham Palace. In a strange country, with racing traffic going the wrong way, we walked up and down streets until we turned a corner . . . . and the sight we beheld took my breath away. It was Big Ben. I stood transfixed, teary eyed, thinking of how proudly it had withstood Hitler's bombings in WWII and how magnificently it stood before me that day. Yes, we did find Buchingham Palace and many other wonderful sights during our month long stay, but nothing . . . nothing eclipsed the dramatic surprise we met rounding that corner.

Recently, I overheard Chloe speaking on the phone with my sister, Marsha. Chloe handled herself with such well mannered maturity; I realized that at some time when I wasn't looking, she had grown up, yet a little more. I had no idea she had developed such grace.

I reflected on times I’ve set myself up for disappointment by anticipating too much out of situations, and people; benefits overshadowed by unrealistic expectations. Imposing my value system on others, judging them, invariably leads to unfair evaluation. It is so much better to appreciate what someone did than be disappointed by what they did not do. This isn’t to say we should have low expectations of others, but to curb our judgments of them. I am a lot happier when I don’t expect people to do things exactly the way I would do them and I surely appreciate it when others do the same for me. It's hard though, I like to be in control of situations and it has been a challenge for me to let go of the grip, to let life take its own path.

When Chloe was on the phone, I had let down for a moment, relaxed my control. Instead of managing her . . . . this once, I was just listening. In that moment, caught off guard, I was delighted by her maturity and manners. It was like finding a beautiful blossom at the end of a twig, pleasantly unexpected.

Mission Accomplished !

Photobucket

This is what 3400 photos looks like when organized into photo albums.

Pheeeeeew!

This project was long overdue

and it feels fabulous having it all done.

In addition to 2400 photos in boxes in the garage,
There were an additional 1000 photos to print from computer files.
We hadn't printed many photos since we moved to Texas
. . . that was 4 years ago!
So, I had some catching up to do.

Now I just have to keep it up to date.

No prob :)

Nature's Gift

Photobucket

An uprooted oak had a gift for me today.

Photobucket

Last winter, this beautiful oak tree toppled over in the woods,
when the ground was softened by rain.

When the tree died,
the leaves turned golden amber and stayed attached to the branches;

I've had my eye on them for awhile
.

Today I took some home for fall decorating.
I am going to spray them with clear acrylic, in hopes they will store for next year.

voila !

I would like to say a few words about General Conference.

Steve, Chloe, and I, together in our living room, eating nachos, enjoyed all 8 hours of Conference. This conference seemed to get back to basics; two particular messages spoke to my heart and soul. The first was about Love, given by President Uchtdorf. He counseled that love should be at the center of everything we do, and that if we love God, we will keep His commandments. I especially liked it when he said, "love should be our walk and our talk."

While President Uchtdorf's message spoke to my heart, Elder Holland's message spoke to my soul. He delivered, what may be, the most powerful testimony I have ever heard of the Book of Mormon.

I feel different today.

I re listened to both messages this morning and I am uplifted and moved to change.

It was a wonderful weekend.

My Artwork

Considering the name of my blog,

I thought this was appropriate:

Here is my most recent artwork

I was a prolific artist until I got married, then, child rearing took my time and energy for several years. One day, I looked around my house and it was completely decorated with prints of other artists' work; it had been 15 years since I picked up a paintbrush.

I decided that day that I had been blessed with a love, and some talent, for art; and even if I wasn't ever going to be one of the The Great Masters, my home would rather have my work on its walls than any other artist.

I signed up for an oil painting class.

I was nervous,

wondering if I had forgotten all of my skills.

This is what I painted:

Next, I gave Impressionism a try;
it turned out to be more difficult than expected.
